Study and practical stays abroad require thorough and timely preparations. Beginning to organise six to twelve months in advance of the stay is advised. You also need to keep the time and duration of your stay in mind. Here are some more things that need to be considered before a stay abroad:
- Go through the application and preparation process at your university.
Contact your International Office and your international representative in good time. The International Office will nominate you for an exchange at FHWS.
Apply for the stay abroad at FHWS.
As soon as FHWS has received your nomination, you will receive an email containing a link to the application portal open to incoming students. There you will need to sign up and upload a few documents.
Apply for the FHWS Praxis International scholarship.
If you are interested in receiving a scholarship through our project, you will need to send us your one-page letter of motivation, your tabular CV and an up-to-date transcript.
Do you have health insurance coverage in Germany?
It is mandatory for all students in Germany to have health insurance. You can take out insurance in Germany, or, in some cases, you can have foreign health insurance. You can find detailed information on the validity and conclusion of a health insurance contract on the web pages of the International Office.
Inform yourself about the exact start dates of the semester
and the orientation dates at the partner university. For your internship you should clarify the starting date of your work at the company in time and plan your travel accordingly.
Start looking for an accommodation early.
All incoming students can apply for a room in one of the student residences provided by the Studentenwerk Würzburg. If you wish to accept the offer, please inform yourself about the deadlines for registration in time. If you are interested searching for a flat or a room in a shared flat on the private market, please keep in mind that this can take more time.
Find out how to get from the airport to Würzburg.
FHWS does not offer a collection service, so you need to arrange your travel to Würzburg yourself. The city has a great traffic connection and is easy to reach by train.
Are your documents still valid?
Make sure that your entry documents (e.g. passport) are valid until the end of your stay.
Following the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the EU on 31 January 2020, there is a transitional period until the end of 2020 during which the travel and residence regulations for EU citizens will not change. This period may be extended, should the negotiations between the United Kingdom and the EU be unsuccessful. Make sure to keep up-to-date on new rules and regulations.
Draw up your Learning Agreement.
There are a few things to keep in mind during your stay as well. Regularly check for new emails possibly containing updates from your university and the FHWS Praxis International team, and follow the rules and instructions given by FHWS and your employer during your stay.
During a semester abroad:
Confirmation of Stay—at the start
Once you have arrived at the partner university, you will need to have your arrival confirmed on-site.
You can either use the form of your home university or the form of the partner university. For a two-semester stay you need a separate confirmation for each semester.
Participate in the orientation programme.
There, you will not only receive valuable information on the university and life in Würzburg and Germany, you will also meet many other exchange and international students you can get in touch with.
Confirmation of Stay—at the end
At the end of your study stay you will have your “Confirmation of Stay” signed again to confirm the exact end date of your stay.
Changes to the Learning Agreement
Should there be any changes to the Learning Agreement, you will need to have these confirmed by the guest university or your employer, and send the signed form to your coordinator at the home university immediately (see “During the mobility” in the Learning Agreement).
You are receiving a scholarship from us?
If you are a scholarship holder, you have to write a short monthly report on your stay and send it to the project team. With your consent, we will publish the reports on our website.
After you have returned to the UK, you will need to take just a few more steps to complete your mobility. There are only a few more things to do:
All students that have received a Praxis International scholarship will need to send their final experience report to the project team.
Transcript of Records at the end of a study semester
At the end of your stay at the guest university you will receive a Transcript of Records.
You need to submit this to your home university in order to transfer your credits.
For comprehensive lists on the preparations for your arrival in Würzburg, contact persons during your stay or leisure activities, please refer to the websites of the International Office. There you will also find lists to download.
